The global economy faces a host of environmental challenges including strategic climate change, depleted resources, rising food security risks and increasing population. With health consciousness and pro-environment attitudes creeping in among the growing population, it is inevitable that the drive towards sustainability will shift towards adopting renewable energy sources and organic agriculture.

In light of such a trend the time is ripe to tap into the potential of solar energy as a new tool for organic agriculture which will be taken up in greater detail by Dr. Rania Ahmed Abd El-Wahab, Researcher, Plant Protection Research Institute, Agriculture Research Center, Eqypt at the Gulf Eco Conference 2013. Taking place alongside the Gulf Eco Expo 2013 under the theme Harnessing the potential of Oman's Renewable Energy, the Gulf Eco Conference 2013 will be held from 21st-22nd January, 2013 at the Golden Tulip Hotel.

Solar energy is an important tool and its abundant availability in the Gulf puts it in a prominent position to be put to use in all fields, including agriculture. Agricultural applications of solar energy include crop and grain drying, space and water heating, greenhouse heating, remote electricity supply and water pumping. Organic farming/agriculture refers to the production of vegetable and livestock through use of natural sources of nutrients (compost, crop residues, manure) and natural methods of crop and weed control instead of using synthetic or inorganic agrochemicals. While considering effective sustainable practices in organic agriculture, the use of renewable energy sources particularly solar energy seems the favourable choice due to its cost and time effectiveness, low maintenance requirements, technological feasibility, scalability, reduced dependency on fossil fuels and manpower.

At the Gulf Eco Conference 2013, Dr. Rania will get into the technicalities of how combination of organic agriculture and solar energy paves the way towards food safety and how solar energy can be incorporated into the process of organic agriculture. Furthermore she will explore the convenient role of solar energy in each step of the process as well as the implications of incorporating the same into existing agricultural infrastructure and design and the impact it will have on the food industry in general and Oman in particular.
